Residents Reimagine Reno As Outdoor Recreation Hub

Alexa Ard

The City of Reno is moving forward with the process to update its master plan. This week, city council members heard the latest update from the Reimagine Reno campaign which has been gathering community input on how the city should grow in the next twenty or so years. Reno Public Radio's Michelle Billman reports.

After holding dozens of community workshops and offering surveys online, the Reimagine Reno team has heard from more than 5,800 residents.

Maureen McKissick helped oversee that effort. She said that, overwhelmingly, people want to see Reno continue growing into an outdoor recreation hub.

"People talked quite a bit about their appreciation of the natural environment, an array of options that they felt were unique to their area," McKissick explained at Wednesday's meeting. "It mattered to them. This really turned out to be a very important identity that most of our residents felt  we needed to elevate."

At the meeting, city council voted to continue into the second phase of the planning process, which will start next month and includes drafting a revised master plan to be implemented by mid-2017. It's been about 20 years since the last major revision.
