With New Leaders, Washoe GOP Looks To Reboot

The Washoe County GOP has elected new leadership following major intraparty turmoil.

Last month, the county party elected a new chairman and three other elected officers following the mass resignation of its previous board in March.

Those resignations were the result of long-simmering tensions within the party, which came to a head after the presidential caucus, according to Roger Edwards, Washoe's new party chairman.

"A lot of folks that were involved with this party were worried more about their personal interests — that might not have been the party's interest — and chose to play fast and loose with our own bylaws, and ended up getting us sued for $18,000 bucks," says Edwards.

Edwards says he's spent the past six weeks cleaning up the mess the previous staff left behind.

"We had to break [open] the doors; we had to break into the computers; we had to rebuild files that were gone, shielded, corrupted or physically removed from the office," says Edwards. “We had make sure the doors stayed open and the lights were on and someone answered the phone.”

Now they're moving forward, promoting local candidates and events, like the recent visit by Vice Presidential nominee Mike Pence.

Joining Edwards on the executive board is Vice Chair Michael Jack, Secretary Debbie Sauk and Treasurer Sherry Powell.

Edwards says their priority is to keep registering new voters and maintain Republican majorities in the Nevada legislature come November.
