Nevada Lawmakers Greenlight Raiders Stadium Deal

Alexa Ard

The Nevada Assembly approved the bill to spend $750 million in public taxpayer money on an NFL stadium on Friday afternoon. With more from NPR member station KNPR, here's Casey Morell.

The Assembly sent the measure to Governor Brian Sandoval's desk after a long day of testimony Thursday that bled into Friday morning.

Lawmakers found out late in the night nearly $900 million in infrastructure spending would be needed for roadways leading to and from the stadium, if it gets built – and that money will have to be diverted from other projects already on the table.

Still, they decided to greenlight it.

One of the tenants of the new stadium will be the UNLV Rebels football team. UNLV President Len Jessup applauded the decision and invoked some historical imagery.

"Well, you know, anything this significant is always going to be complex," Jessup said. "It's always going to be difficult. But I'm reminded of the JFK quote that we don't do these things because they're easy, but because they're hard. That's why we do them."

Reports suggest Sandoval will sign the bill into law on Monday in Las Vegas.
