For the first time, there are two Millennials running for a seat on Sparks City Council. Our contributor Gabriella De Leon, with Noticiero Movil, reports on the race for Ward 1.
Donald Abbot and Denise Lopez have a lot in common. They both want to pass Washoe County Question 1, an initiative to raise sales tax to help fund public schools. Both candidates want stricter jay walking laws and to continue the expansion of Sparks’ congested roads. Where the two diverge is their vision for city’s future.
“We just need to keep doing what we're doing,” Abbott said. “There’s a reason why Sparks is growing and there’s so many more events that are coming to Sparks instead of Reno. We have the beautiful marina; we have Golden Eagle.”
That was Abbott speaking at a recent candidate night hosted by the Sparks Tribune and a local nonprofit called Thirtynine North Downtown.
His opponent, Lopez, wants to see real change.
“One of the things that I’ve been doing, I’ve been knocking on a lot of doors and I've been making a lot of calls. What some of the business owners have told me is they want to make Sparks the city of choice where they can start and grow their business. Some of the residents want to make sure they can have a good quality of life and one of the ways that we can do that is by ensuring their safety.”
Two other Sparks City Council seats are up for grabs next month.
