There’s a little bit of fall already in the air, and it’s definitely feeling that way on the University of Nevada, Reno campus with parents on the grounds, students settling in to the residence halls, the student bookstore doing brisk business and the overall pace and activity picking up. Another record enrollment is expected, with nearly 21,000 students projected for the fall semester.

The University of Nevada, Reno campus is about ready to welcome another record number of students when classes begin Aug. 24, and there’s a group of freshmen who are getting a head start Aug. 16-20.

While incoming freshmen may see their first year of college as the "thirteenth grade," they are often surprised by the immediate intensity of, and adjustment required for, university-level study. Success in college requires a new mindset along with a higher level of preparation that many freshmen just aren't ready for as classes get underway.

While other tragedies and national disasters have taken over the headlines, Ebola remains a serious and persistent global concern.

Dr. David AuCoin is a microbiology professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine who is working in partnership with a Canadian virologist to develop an important point-of-care rapid diagnostic test for Ebola. The testing uses no Ebola sample or human virus, so no risk of exposure exists in this process.
