About Us

An outreach and engagement service of the University of Nevada, Reno, KUNR has broadcast from campus since October 7, 1963. We are a nonprofit, non-commercial, listener-supported public radio station licensed to the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education, which also holds the licenses for KNCC, our station in Elko, and KNCJ Nevada Classical and Jazz.

KUNR has been a member station of National Public Radio (NPR) since 1981, and also carries programs from American Public Media, Public Radio International and other services. KUNR has a renowned local news staff, which has been honored recently with national awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association, the Public Media Journalism Association and the Online News Association.

KNCC began broadcasting in 1992, carrying KUNR’s signal. In 2016, we launched KNCJ Nevada Classical and Jazz, providing 24/7 cultural programming not available elsewhere on the Reno area radio dial. In addition to presenting music delivered by satellite, KNCJ has invested in producing local music shows such as Saturday Night Jazz and Wednesday Evening Classics.

In 2018, KUNR became an administrative unit of UNR’s Reynolds School of Journalism, reflecting the station’s increased emphasis upon news reporting and digital distribution. KUNR in 2019 joined the Mountain West News Bureau (MWNB), a collaboration of regional public radio stations which produce and share journalism about the the Mountain West region. The MWNB is supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting as well as each member station.

We embrace our nonprofit status and mission of public service. We operate as a largely self-sustaining entity within UNR, generating revenue from listener contributions, business underwriting, tax-based federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and grants from supporters.
