Debate over gun rights heats up in Carson

Guns could be coming to a campus parking lot near you. Some lawmakers in Carson City say that's a good thing, while others believe schools and universities should remain gun free.

Josh Wilsey, a junior at the University of Nevada, Reno, doesn’t really have a problem with guns on campus.

“I wouldn’t say it would really bother me. I think in Nevada you’re going to have guns everywhere anyway.”

The University of Nevada is now part of U-Teach, which prepares high school teachers in what are called the STEM subjects -- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. 

At the University, it's called NevadaTeach. And beginning this fall, incoming science majors (and eventually other STEM majors) will be able to take part in this focused and streamlined way to receive a teaching certificate and education degree within the four-year course of study.

College football’s national championship game dominated television viewing with huge ratings. The recent college playoff bowl games set records. The NFL playoffs have taken over millions of viewers’ weekends with more than 110 million viewers expected to watch the Feb. 1 Super Bowl.

University President Marc Johnson and Communications Director Jane Tors reviewed the University's Top 10 Stories of 2014, visiting with David Stipech on KUNR's  Beyond the Headlines (air date 1-9-15).

The study of psychology has a wide range of applications, not merely in clinical and mental health fields, according to Victoria Follette, Ph.D, Foundation Professor of Psychology and chair of the University of Nevada, Reno's Department of Psychology. With most jobs involving an understanding of people and their behavior and motivations at some level, psychology can be a valuable course of study for virtually any career path. 

Dr. Follette visited about the Psychology program with University Provost Kevin Carman on KUNR's Beyond the Headlines.

This past week, national media reported on the apparent journalistic lapses by Rolling Stone magazine regarding an article it published on sexual assaults on America's college campuses. The magazine's editors announced their own lack of faith in the reporting at the heart of the article.

Wolf Pack officials are hoping to get approval from the Nevada System of Higher Education's Board of Regents for more than $11 million worth of upgrades to Mackay Football Stadium. To learn more about the proposed renovations, Reno Public Radio's Michelle Bliss spoke to Doug Knuth, the director of athletics for the University of Nevada, Reno.

University of Nevada, Reno, Provost Kevin Carman visited with Dr. Patsy Ruchala, director of the Orvis School of Nursing, to talk about trends in nursing education on KUNR's Beyond the Headlines (11-14-14).

The discussion included national initiative to increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020, double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020 and continue to engage nurses in lifelong learning.

As Nevada continues to celebrate the Silver State's Sesquicentennial in hundreds of ways statewide, a special ceremony was held Oct. 22 marking the University of Nevada, Reno's 140th birthday in the place it all started -- Elko.

Most people probably don't realize the University Preparatory School -- precursor to the University of Nevada -- first opened its doors in Elko to seven students on Oct. 12, 1874. The Nevada State Legislature approved the relocation of the University of Nevada to Reno in 1885, and students were welcomed to classes in Morrill Hall in 1886.
