That includes Niche Podcast, which profiles people in Reno with unique passions and hobbies, like Joe Marino, who owns a local coffee shop in MidTown. Contributor David Calvert stopped by the shop to learn more about Joe's business and his story.

Urban Reno Art: Adding Beauty, Deterring Graffiti

Murals are popping up all over Midtown Reno and trickling into the downtown corridor as well. The city counts close to 60, making it easy to spot one. Our reporter Holly Hutchings talked with a tagger-turned-muralist who is beautifying the city one painting at a time. 

The murals are everywhere, covering fences, alleyways and entire sides of businesses. These huge pieces of free art are helping define a neighborhood that wasn’t always so appealing.

In recent years, the Regional Transportation Commission, or RTC, has held numerous public meetings about redesigning portions of Virginia Street in Reno's MidTown District. Our reporter Bob Conrad of ThisisReno.com has the latest update.

Virginia Street in MidTown is constrained by the roadway’s width and the need for ADA-accessible sidewalks, which has prompted plans to eliminate a center turn lane in favor of wider sidewalks.

Tiny Housing Grows In Downtown Reno

A housing community called the Tiny Ten is coming to downtown Reno.

Local urban developers Kelly Rae and Pamela Haberman of HabeRae Properties knew they were on to something when they first started building tiny homes over a decade ago.

“The tiny homes are the future," Rae says, "as far as our millennials, our [baby] boomers or Generation X-ers that don’t want to live in an 1,800 to 3,000 square foot house out in the suburbs, who want to be near the urban core."

The Basement: Touring Reno's New 'Hipster Mall'

An underground marketplace called The Basement has opened inside the historic 1933 post office in downtown Reno. Our reporter Rocio Hernandez took a tour of the renovated space and sends us this audio postcard. 

More than half a dozen shops are tucked between brick walls and under a maze of exposed pipes. I wander into Sugar Love Chocolates where store owner Krysta Bea Jackson is attending to new customers.

Jackson says her products are made from French and Belgium chocolate and natural ingredients such as fresh strawberries and pistachios. At least one customer is sold.
