An empty lot in downtown Reno will soon house a locally-owned medical marijuana dispensary called Mynt. Our contributor Brook Bentley of the Northern Nevada Business Weekly has the story.

Medical marijuana dispensaries have been popping up across Nevada. Those businesses are eagerly waiting to see if the ballot initiative to legalize recreational pot will pass in the state this election.

MedMen, a marijuana management and capital firm based in Los Angeles, broke ground on a new production and cultivation facility this month in Washoe County. Our contributor Brook Bentley of the Northern Nevada Business Weekly has the details. 

The 45,000-square-foot operation east of Sparks is opening next year and will cost $15 million. It's the firm’s first project in Nevada and is expected to produce 10,000 pounds of cannabis each year.

Because medical marijuana is not federally approved, access for veterans is an issue nationwide, including in Nevada's 2nd Congressional District.

Reno Public Radio’s Noah Glick reports.

As it stands, veterans getting care at VA facilities are unable to discuss medical marijuana treatment with their doctors, even in states where it’s legal. If interested, they must go outside the VA system.

This issue was looked at by Congress this year but ultimately nothing was passed.

Elko Extends Ban on Medical Marijuana Shops

Elko is extending its ban on medical marijuana shops despite comments from residents who want it lifted.

Elko Daily Free Press reporter Marianne McKown says most people who attended the meeting last week spoke in favor of the dispensaries.

“Pretty much everybody who got up said that they were for lifting the ban on medical marijuana,” she says, “because it’s already hard enough to find doctors; we shouldn’t eliminate being able to get our medicine.”
