In Elko, Candidates Try To Woo Rural Electorate

With the Iowa caucuses behind them, presidential candidates must now turn their attention to the next few battleground states like New Hampshire and Nevada. In a nod to the importance of the rural vote, several candidates have made stops in Elko this election season. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey sat down with veteran Elko Daily Free Press reporter Marianne McKown to learn more about the issues that matter most to these voters.  Below are shortened excerpts of their conversation.

Columba Bush Makes Quiet Pit Stop At UNR

Columba Bush, the wife of GOP presidential hopeful Jeb, held a roundtable with local high school and college students at the University of Nevada, Reno, on Wednesday. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey was there.

Bush met with students in a quiet corner of UNR's campus to listen to their concerns on hot-button issues like immigration, abortion and rising student debt.

In Reno, Marco Rubio Calls For Immigration Fixes

GOP presidential hopeful Marco Rubio stumped in Reno last night (Monday), the first of a multi-leg tour of the state. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey was there and has this report.

About 250 people crowded into a ballroom at the Peppermill Casino to hear Rubio outline what he thinks it will take for America to succeed in the 21st century. 

The Florida Senator spoke extensively on immigration, emphasizing his parents' journey from Cuba to the United States in the 1950s. 

Jeb Bush Greets Supporters In Reno

Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush stopped by Reno Wednesday, his fourth visit to the Silver State. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey reports.

A friendly crowd packed into a conference room at the Hyatt near the Reno-Tahoe International Airport for a quick meet-and-greet with Bush.

"Now is the time to start fixing things rather than yappin' about 'em," Bush told supporters.

The former Florida governor was joined on stage by Nevada Sen. Dean Heller and Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch. Both endorsed Bush ahead of the rally.
