Three seats are up for grabs on the Reno City Council this November. One of those is for Ward 2, which covers much of South Reno and the area south of Midtown.

An organization representing more than thirty law enforcement agencies across the state is voicing its concern for a proposal by Washoe County Sheriff Candidate Chuck Allen to revitalize the county's reserve deputy program, which currently has nine volunteer participants. Reno Public Radio's Michelle Bliss reports.

Allen says the sheriff's office needs more boots on the ground since about 100 positions have been cut in the past several years.

State Senator Barbara Cegavske and Nevada Treasurer Kate Marshall disagreed on both election reform and voter ID laws during thir first debate as secretary of state candidates. That office oversees Nevada's election process and Reno Public Radio's Michelle Bliss has the latest details on the race.

Marshall, a Democrat, criticized her opponent Cegavske, a Republican, for voting multiple times against major campaign reform. Along with increasing how often campaign finances are reported, Marshall said she wants more transparency regarding gifts from lobbyists.

Reno mayoral candidates Hillary Schieve and Ray Pezonella agree on many issues...but not on staffing levels for public safety personnel, like firefighters. Reno Public Radio's Michelle Bliss reports that this contention came up at a debate Thursday.

Both candidates for Washoe County Sheriff agree that the community presence of local law enforcement must grow, but Reno Public Radio’s Michelle Bliss reports they offer different pathways for making that happen if elected in November.

At a debate Thursday night in Reno, hosted by KNPB and the Reno Gazette Journal, candidates Chuck Allen and Tim Kuzanek faced off in advance of the upcoming election.

The race is nonpartisan and what sets Hillary Schieve and Ray Pezonella apart often comes down to style, personality and backing, rather than policy.
