Huge Stadium Deal Passes State Senate

A bill to raise hotel taxes to fund an NFL stadium and a convention center expansion has crossed its first hurdle in the Nevada Legislature.

The Nevada Senate voted 16-5 Tuesday to approve the measure. Democratic opponents have said they oppose putting public funds to a project backed by billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, while Republican opponents are against raising taxes.

State Sen. Ruben Kihuen, a Democrat from Las Vegas who is running for Congress, voted against the measure and spoke out against it Tuesday.

Affordable Senior Housing Breaks Ground In South Reno

A new affordable housing project for seniors broke ground in Reno this week. Our contributor Brook Bentley of Northern Nevada Business Weekly reports.

Vintage Housing and GreenStreet Companies held a ground-breaking ceremony for Vintage at The Crossings, a 230-unit senior apartment complex. The project marks the first large-scale affordable housing project to break ground in a decade.

Lawmakers Question The Economics Of Stadium Deal

Lawmakers are in Carson City right now as part of a special session. It's to determine whether or not hotel taxes along the Las Vegas Strip should be increased to raise money for a football stadium in Southern Nevada, as well as to expand the Las Vegas Convention Center. With more, here's Casey Morell from our sister station KNPR in Las Vegas.

The tax increase would break down like this: half a percentage point would go the new convention center expansion and .88 percent would go to the football stadium.

Small business employment across Nevada reached an all-time high during the first quarter of 2016. Reno Public Radio’s Noah Glick has more on the latest numbers.

Nevada has officially regained the job numbers lost during the recession, both in total and small business employment. That’s according to the most recent data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Bill Anderson is chief economist for the state and he says the growth has been broad-based, meaning he’s seeing increased employment across all economic sectors.

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport recently launched new air service to Long Beach, California. Soon the airport will add flights to Dallas Love Field and Atlanta, Georgia.
