Artown And Whitney Peak Present "Paper Bird"

Artown has a new live music series coming to the Heritage restaurant at the Whitney Peak Hotel.  The first concert is this Friday, the 29th and features the music of "Paper Bird."

Danna O'Connor chats with Beth MacMillin from Artown and Nikki Gross, Manager of Whitney Peak.

The Nevada Historical Society has a new exhibit featuring photographs taken inside Reno casinos during the 1970s and '80s. Reno Public Radio's Danna O'Connor has the details. 

The exhibit is called “Black and White Risk” and the photos are unusual in that photography is banned in Nevada casinos.  The photographer is Jan Aphelin who started working in casinos in the early 1960’s and began secretly taking photos almost immediately.

Reno Philharmonic Classix Three

Drinking With Clowns

Baldo Bobadilla is more than a local musician; he’s an emerging leader in the Reno arts community. Along with organizing last fall’s Off Beat Music Festival, which drew thousands of concert-goers downtown, Bobadilla runs a nonprofit that provides art education to local kids.

Reno Public Radio’s Noah Glick sat down with Bobadilla to hear his story.

As lead singer and guitarist of Drinking With Clowns, Baldo Bobadilla brings a funky Latin sound to the Reno music scene. And when it comes to music, he says anything goes.

La Gente: Latino Theater at RLT

For over 80 years, the Reno Little Theater has been entertaining our community with high quality plays.  This year, it is offering La Gente: Latino Theater at RLT.  The first play in the series, is Mi Vida Gitana, a modern cross-cultural Romeo and Juliet story about a Texas boy who loses his dad to the war in Iraq and is sent to Spain to live with his mom.  There he is thrown into the Spanish Romani culture.  Danna O'Connor caught up with the series curator, Tami Castillo Shelton to learn more.

Reno's New Art Installation: The Light Chimes

A new public art installation went up Thursday at Wingfield Park, as another effort to build the perception of Reno as an arts destination. Contributor Bob Conrad with our media partner ThisisReno has the story.

The sculpture is called The Light Chimes and is the brainchild of Nevada Artist Scott Morgan.

The Light Chimes uses photographic images to produce lights and colors,” Morgan explains. “If you can imagine wind chimes, only instead of metal rods that produce sound, imagine acrylic rods that produce light.” 

Nevada Chamber Music Festival 12-26 Through 12-31

The Reno Chamber Orchestra hosts the 12th annual Nevada Chamber Music Festival the last week of December.  There are 11 concerts in six days featuring some of the best musicians in the world.  Opening night is Saturday, December 26th at 7pm at Nightingale Concert Hall.  Danna O'Connor chats with Chris Morrison, Executive Director of the RCO.

Latino Research Center at the University of Nevada, Reno

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Latino Research Center is collecting stories from Latinas about gender violence for a national anthology.

Reno Public Radio’s Alexa Ard reports that the project is shedding light on undocumented women facing abuse.
