Washoe Golf Course Managers Remain Despite $1 Million Unpaid Bill

Bob Conrad

The Washoe Board of County Commissioners has chosen to stick with the current operators of the Washoe Golf Course. That’s despite an unpaid bill of about $1 million. Our reporter Bob Conrad reports.

Four potential vendors were up for consideration, but the board ultimately selected the lowest-ranked bidder, and current operator, Bell-Men Golf.

While nationally owned Billy Casper golf was the top-ranked vendor by the county, locally owned Mazz Golf was second in line.

Even though Bell-Men’s outstanding bill drew criticism back in May, the board narrowly voted to allow the company to continue operating the course.

A Washoe County Commissioner says she has "grave concerns" about the Washoe County School District's bill that's being discussed
Washoe County Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler.

Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler explains why:

“This group (Bell-Men) really knows this course, and maybe if we give them the opportunity to do all the maintenance and everything, it will be an effective agreement that will work for us.”

When pressed on how the county will be paid back, Berkbigler says that remains unclear.

“That’s something we haven’t worked out yet, so I’m not comfortable how that’s actually going to be done but I think the new contract gives us the opportunity to earn back the money.”

Commissioners Vaughn Hartung and Bob Lucey voted against the measure.
