Reno Lands Professional Soccer League

Julia Ritchey

A professional soccer team will be playing at Aces Ballpark under a new franchise agreement announced on Wednesday. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey reports.

"Ladies and Gentleman, it's my honor to award the 28th franchise of the United Soccer League to Reno, Nevada *applause, fireworks*"

The new team will begin playing at the ballpark downtown in 2017, overlapping some with the baseball season.

This team is part of the United Soccer League, a third-tier professional organization with clubs across the U.S. and Canada, including one in nearby Sacramento.

United Soccer League President Jake Edwards announced the deal at a ceremony with Reno Aces team owner Herb Simon and Gov. Brian Sandoval, among other local officials.

"Reno is one of the cities in the United States that has a real international feel and focus with over 4 million people visiting here annually. Reno is the perfect game for this city. "

The Reno Aces had pursued the deal in a goal to increase usage of the ballpark, which was built in part with public funds.

This new agreement only involves private money, but details on terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In the meantime, the next step before any goals are scored is finding a new name for the team. Go here to submit your suggestion for a name.
