Public Memorial Announced For State Sen. Debbie Smith

Facebook

Funeral services have been announced for Nevada Sen. Debbie Smith, who died yesterday at the age of 60.

A public memorial will be held this Sunday, Feb. 28, at noon at Sparks High School. The family is asking in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation for brain cancer research.

The Sparks lawmaker was first elected to the state Assembly in 2000 and won a seat in the Senate in 2012. She won several lawmaker of the year awards and was the president of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

She missed some of the 2015 legislative session after undergoing surgery last February, but closely followed developments in the Legislature.

She was mobbed by well-wishers when she returned to business part-time in April.

Smith was married and had three children.
