This weekend, Reno’s newest LGBT community space, Our Center, hosted a couple of unique fundraising events, including Drag Bingo. Reno Public Radio’s Aishwarya Krishnamoorthy was there and has more.

It’s like regular bingo, except people showed up in drag, wearing high heels and extravagant makeup. Meredith Tanzer is the Vice President of Build Our Center, the initiative to create and run an LGBT community space in Reno. She says this event is one way the center is working toward inclusion.

“It’s important to me to contribute to a community that I want to live in," she says. "When my nieces come to town I want to be proud to show them that I work at a place that’s very diverse, and every kind of culture is here and honored.”

Paco Lachoy is the editor and publisher of The Reno Gay Page, an LGBT-focused online news outlet. He was also there and says shared experiences like these help bring the community together.

“When we’re taking about other gay people, we usually use the word “family” because that’s what we are to each other," he says. "We’re close that way.”

More than 50 people attended the event, and organizers say they are thrilled that so many people showed love for their community.
