Olympic Valley Offically Ends Bid To Become A Town

The effort to incorporate Olympic Valley into its own town has ended. Reno Public Radio’s Amy Westervelt has been covering the proposal and has this update.

After trying for nearly three years to turn the unincorporated community surrounding Squaw into a town, the nonprofit Incorporate Olympic Valley officially pulled its application yesterday. The Placer County Commission overseeing the application declared the town financially unviable last week, making it difficult for the effort to continue.

Andy Wirth, CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, has been opposed to the incorporation effort from the beginning.

“They started the effort based on stopping development, but I think quickly realized that the very thing they were trying to stop was the same thing that was going to financially help their cause.”

The Olympic Valley incorporation plan initially began as an effort to stop the proposed expansion of the Village at Squaw Valley Ski Resort. That development plan has changed significantly in the years since, and Wirth says he’s eager to talk to the incorporation proponents and find a path forward.

“This has been a bit of a divisive issue for our community, so the number one thought is how we can move quickly into a healing mode.”

To that end, Wirth says he and others have reached out to Incorporate Olympic Valley in the hopes of meeting with them as soon as possible to discuss a path forward.
