Nevada's first medical marijuana dispensary opened Friday in Sparks. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey reports.
Workers at Silver State Relief are anticipating a long line of customers when they open at 10 a.m.
The store is located in an industrial area of Sparks off McCarran Boulevard.
The state authorized dispensaries in 2013, but it's taken would-be business owners another two years to navigate the regulations.
Aron Swan is the general manager of the shop. He says cannabis provides a real alternative for people in pain.
"We receive phone calls and people coming up to the door that (say) cannabis is the only medicine that gets them through the day and able to function in society," says Swan.
To start the shop will cap purchases at half an ounce, which will cost $195. By law, patients can buy up to 2.5 ounces every two weeks.
A second dispensary is expected to open in Reno in mid-August.
