Gunman Dead After Hostage Situation At Montage Apartments

Paul Boger

9 a.m. Wednesday update:

Police in Reno say they've killed a suspect in an active shooting situation and are reporting no other serious injuries.

Officers originally responded to calls from inside the Montage apartment building in downtown Reno around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Shortly thereafter, a woman who was in the room with the shooter called police dispatch and said she was being held hostage and was afraid for her life.

It was at that point that the shooter fired multiple times from an 8th story apartment onto the streets below. Police stormed the room where the suspect was located and shot him, freeing the hostage. He later died from the wound.

Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson says the suspect’s motives were unclear:

“You know, we were optimistic that we would be able to interview the suspect and find out what his motivation was. Obviously, we won’t have that opportunity now. This seems to be more of a domestic situation and maybe some mental health issues involved as well.”

The incident comes less than two months after the October 1st mass shooting in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead and hundreds more wounded.

9 p.m. Tuesday update:

According to Reno Police on Twitter: No further threat downtown. Please continue to avoid the area while first responders continue on scene. Thank you for your cooperation.

One male suspect is dead after Reno Police detained him at the Montage Apartments in downtown Reno.

Law enforcement officers responded to an active shooter call earlier this evening.

The department is reporting that there are no serious injuries because of this active shooter situation.

The police evacuated as many people as possible from the Montage to surrounding casinos, while others at the apartments sheltered in place. Broadway says the scene was detained rapidly.

Reno Police are working with the FBI and other local agencies to handle this active scene.

4th street to 2nd street along Virginia Street in downtown Reno is blocked off, along with Sierra Street and parts of Center Street.
