The state highway patrol reports that four people have died on US 50 in the past few months, prompting multiple law enforcement agencies to join forces and crackdown on unsafe driving habits. Over the next few weeks, anyone driving on US 50 between Carson City and Fallon will see more troopers patrolling that stretch of road. State Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Lopez says his team will be looking for reckless drivers who are going too fast, following other cars too closely, driving while impaired, or using a cell phone to talk or text. "Every accident that has a fatality is heartbreaking to anyone, including us because we have to go to them. It just so happens that on this road in the past few months we've had four fatal people involved. And that's just too many for us." The expanded enforcement on US 50 will run through mid-August. Agencies involved include the state highway patrol, the Reno Police Department, and the Lyon and Douglas County Sheriff's Offices. The Nevada Highway Patrol is also partnering with ten other states for the "I-80 Challenge" to provide an increased presence on 410 miles of the interstate through the end of this month. The agency reports that in 2011, more than 21,000 people were killed in car crashes in the US. Half of those people were not wearing seatbelts.
