Nevada Supreme Court

The Nevada Supreme Court heard arguments today both for and against the state's sweeping school choice program.

The high court heard two challenges to Nevada's Education Savings Account program, or ESAs, passed by the Republican-controlled legislature last year.

The ESAs are designed to give parents the state's per-pupil allocation, roughly $5,000, to pay for private school tuition and other qualified programs.

At question in the first challenge is whether the state inappropriately diverted funds from public schools.

Reno’s transformation into a start-up hub and art-centric city has caught widespread attention. The spotlight’s on Downtown and Midtown, one reason being a revitalized food scene. Our reporter Marcus Lavergne recently took an in-depth look to figure out if Reno has what it takes to become the next culinary powerhouse:

As Jessica Shapiro, a catering chef from the Cheese Board, a Midtown bistro, sears symmetrical squares of pork belly over a portable stove, the sweet, smoky scent seems to blanket the whole patio at Campo, an Italian restaurant in downtown Reno.

The Tahoe Reno Industrial Center just welcomed a company in the battery industry, but it’s not Tesla.

Aqua Metals, a company which recycles lead batteries, held a grand opening to unveil the world’s first facility for a process company executives call “AquaRefining.”

More environmentally friendly than smelting, “AquaRefining” dissolves the lead acid from batteries in a water solution instead of heating it and causing emissions.

Nevada ranks near the bottom nationwide in overall child well-being. That’s according to a study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

The Nevada Supreme Court is preparing to hear arguments on Friday over the state's controversial school choice program.

Nevada's Education Savings Accounts have been under scrutiny since legislators approved the program last year.

But that hasn't stopped more than 6,000 parents from signing up already. The ESAs allow parents to tap into the state's per-pupil funding, roughly $5,000, to help pay for private or home schooling.

Many people in the Truckee Meadows are sweltering this week from several days of triple-digit temperatures. Reno Public Radio’s Anh Gray reports heat stroke is a health risk in the dead heat of summer.

A few scary things happen when someone suffers a heat stroke. A person’s temperature rises rapidly and then the body’s ability to sweat shuts down. This leaves the person unable to cool down and the body temperature can spike to a dangerous level of 106 degrees or higher, along with other symptoms.

Because of community concerns involving the cost of some services at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital, Elko County Commissioners are asking hospital officials to re-evaluate their pricing.

The lingering widespread haze caused by California wildfires combined with high temperatures this week can be a health risk for people with asthma. Reno Public Radio’s Anh Gray explains.

Dr. Sonia Budhecha is with Renown Medical Group. She says asthma is most common in children and is a condition when the bronchial tubes, or airways, get obstructed.

Electric car maker Tesla officially opened its Gigafactory near Reno.
